Rey, I am Your Cousin

It's a little bit loose if you describe Episode VII as a rehash of tried and tested formula. As long as the Force exists, the Skywalker family affair remains the center of gravity in leading the dark or the light side. But if it ever was intended then it is still understandable given the existing canon, given the same constellations in a far away galaxy 30 years after the Evil Empire was crushed. It's a big task on the shoulder of J.J. Abrams to deliver the goods and I think he just passed the test. The Force Awakens is better than A New Hope (Episode IV) and just below The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi on my overall ranking of the Star Wars Episodes. It's just sad to see the brutal demise of a template space cowboy---an icon that span generations of movie geeks and nerds. Who would have thought that Han Solo is now gone? He has a higher magnitude of awesomeness than Chuck Norris and if legend tells that Chuck Norris cannot die (I feel sorry for the cobra that bit him) then I thought Han Solo can't also die but I was wrong.

Still, the force is strong in this one.

Message

That's what war is all about.
Message.
The louder, the better.

I just rephrased that line from Spawn but if there's one World War II film that you're going to watch this year with a Sherman tank at its disposal, then this is probably that film.

If all roads lead to this...

This transition of a racing franchise into a mission impossible series happens at your very eyes at the speed of an instantaneous Nitro burst but we are not complaining. We are actually extolling it for the love of beautiful and fast machines, old-timer speed freaks.

And if all roads lead to this, then what is left to lead for the next part--the final part? The High Road? A car chase in hell, in space, or perhaps underwater? Letty's got a selective amnesia that's why she forgot about her family but not her racing skills. Ok, I'll take it. As the franchise will finally conclude starting with the big (but not so surprising) revelation of the final villain played by Mr Transporter himself--Jason Statham at the end credits, I think it's about time to finally roll the curtain if you don't want to run on an empty gas.

All good things must end to give way to a better one.

Skyfall

What else can I say about this movie? Sam Mendes made this one a visual candy with picture-perfect shots of selected landscapes in London, Shanghai, Macau, and Scotland. Plot-wise, similar themes can be seen especially from The Dark Knight Returns---the movie that Mendes himself refers to heavily. The opening theme is better than Quantum of Solace, but I think it never surpassed the best opening theme (of all the Bond films) of Casino Royale.  I heard from a Bond fan that the current series needed a break from Bourne-like treatment of extended chase scenes and brutal fights and I think he got his answer. It's cool to see a snapshot of 007's past, and how the story returns to his origins with 007 losing (SPOILER HERE) a longtime guardian, a mother like drawing and closing a perfect circle on a chalkboard.

Forget about the member of the Parliament taking a secondary security treatment next to the head of MI6, forget about a very smart hacker resorting to a not-so-very smart search and destroy tactic, forget about 007 not asking for reinforcements, forget about the generic dialogue between the hero and his nemesis in a revenge story. This is a Bond film and just like Ian Fleming's books, all you need to do is enjoy the women, enjoy the technology, and laugh at how dumb the enemy always ends up. Like watching a classic Pinoy action movie, there's no need to be realistic with geopolitics here, we're watching a movie trying to be sentimental. It's been 50 years.

Ain't No Pooper: Top Sci Fi Pick of the Year

image © DMG and Endgame

To end a dark future, look to the past. To end it all NOW, look to yourself.

This is my top pick as the best Sci Fi movie of 2012. We've been treated with a lot of cliches this year by overdosing on alien and robot invasion themes but I believe nobody and nothing can beat the crap out of this "retro" sci fi that looks more into the past than into the future. It played smoothly with its central theme on "time paradox" and the unfolding of who really is the real enemy is a very enjoyable ride to take. Piper Perabo can still provide the heat (if you know what I mean) and Emily Blunt is still as likable as a hotcake since her breakthrough role in The Adjustment Bureau.

If you want to know more proof of how "retro" this film is, just listen to the soundtrack and look at the rural scenery, an area allocated for green farming just outside the city. And of course, you can even see how people display their raw "telekinetic" skills and how the time machine was used low profile to provide viewers much focus on the story itself, and not on useless distractions.

This one is a must-see for sci fi buffs who want a fresh perspective and looking for a smart story but not being too cerebral. Just look out for the Rainmaker---one of the main characters in the story intentionally hidden in the teaser plot. He's f*ckin cool.

Past VS Future

Sci Fi and film buffs remain skeptic this year after seeing average-to-below-average performances of highly anticipated Sci Fi features like Prometheus and Total Recall. For comic book junkies on the other hand, we have the best reason to celebrate after the success of Avengers  and The Dark Knight Rises.

Could this be the One? We hope so given the narrative and the concept that "look" legit enough. Time travel you say? Hmmmmm...

Written and directed by Rian Johnson, the film stars Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, Noah Segan, Piper Perabo and Jeff Daniels.

Synopsis from the Superhero Hype site:
"In the September 28 release, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past, where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good… until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe's future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination."

In Space, Nobody Can Hear You Complain

Prometheus as a movie, is visually stunning. But as a story, it's heavily misunderstood. Hours before going to the theater for the last full show, I checked the current rating via IMDB and saw negative reviews complaining about how 'stupid' the Prometheus crew was, and how the viewers easily saw plot holes in the storyline and asking for explanation or perhaps an extended version or a director's cut for its upcoming DVD release.

Acknowledging the fact that at least they are hoping to understand the story, it becomes a different matter when at the same time they blame Ridley Scott for not meeting the general expectation. You can always blame the director and the scriptwriter but after seeing it myself, I don't consider the story as a failure. It was actually well-executed. Why? Let's see first the general complaints:

1 The crew has no idea nor plan about the scientific expedition to an undisclosed planet. They are sloppy.

2 Elizabeth Shaw doesn't act like a scientist at all in being religious and keeping the faith.

3 The science aspect here is kinda stupid because the characters gambled a lot.

4 It would only take one crew member to sacrifice and destroy the enemy and would have saved the others than taking a whole bunch of crew to do it.

My answer to these are simple:

1 It's true, the crew has no plan nor idea about the expedition because the real plan is actually hidden from them by Peter Weyland himself and his executor, the android David. That's the reason why the crew was sloppy in doing their fieldwork, they are just mere pawns of the game, a game controlled by the master manipulator Weyland.

2 All scientists believe in something. Whether that belief anchors on something material or unseen, verifiable or improbable, it's still a belief and no unbelieving moron can take it against them. There's such a thing in this world as a Christian Scientist as well as a Liberation Theologist, and so on and so forth. There's even a scientist who is supersitious and it happens. Elizabeth Shaw is exactly like that, she got the instinct that actually helped her survive the ordeal.

3 The science aspect looked stupid, but it's for a purpose and still, an important aspect of the story. All scientists know that sometimes they need to gamble or take some unmeasured risk. Looking at history of science, Benjamin Franklin would never have discovered electricity if he never risked his own life. He really looked stupid flying a kite in the middle of a thunderstorm but no one would think that he's stupid after what he accomplished. Madame Marie Curie would never have discovered the X Ray if she never gambled her health in repetitive experiments inside her highly radioactive laboratory. Those who are thinking that a scientist must never gamble or take risks are probably living inside a cave.

4 Yes, it would take only one crew to launch a destroyer or perhaps, a nuclear armed ship to destroy the enemy but first he needs to be certain about his enemy. You have to know who is your target first, and this is the reason why the expedition team is sent. The scientists were not thinking of any hostile motive based on the archeological findings from Earth that were originally interpreted as an 'invitation' from the 'creator.' But when the time came for an imminent danger that needs to be halted, it was also a majority decision to sacrifice three lives in exchange for mankind's safety. Is this a fair exchange? I believe so.

Noomi Rapace is a worthy actress to take the pedestal vacated by Sigourney Weaver as the ball-busting smart chick. Michael Fassbender fits exactly to the role of the manipulative android, and Charlize Theron is still a hot tamale. Prometheus is obviously made as a prequel to the Alien series but this movie can go on with a new series (as I envisioned), given the fact that Liz and David stole the Engineers ship to an unidentified planet (probably Earth) somewhere in space. In the end, Elizabeth's warning message here is the same message that Ripley intercepted and interpreted as a distress signal in Alien. And we all know what happened after that.

In space, nobody can hear you scream. This is a classic qoute from the first Alien movie. But for Prometheus, the qoute is preferably like this: In space, nobody can hear you complain. And it's better that way.

Still Protecting the Earth from Scum of the Universe

Agent K and J still have it.
They can still kick every illegal alien's butt while cracking well-timed jokes almost instantaneously as the speed of Agent K's first shawarma bite. If the first movie is the best of the three since everything is fresh from alien concepts to political (black) satire, this movie I think is a close runner up to the first. Of course, there can only be one Will Smith in this world and his magic is still evident in this film. I think no one can surpass that magic even if his son prospectively follow his footsteps as an heir to the throne.

Once again, we are treated with unexpected plot twist that will finally show that it was not an accident why Agent J became an MIB agent. He is destined to protect Earth from the scum of the Universe. I was just expecting to see more between Agent O and K. Time travel, when used subtly, can be an effective tool in a Sci Fi story and it's actually good that the writers (from comic to screenplay) never overused it. I am not a fan of time traveling but I can make some exceptions like Back to the Future series and this one. Celebrity cameos suggesting their alien origin can be seen, but Andy Warhol as an alien tops them all.
